Not in vain
Presentation @ Festival Fes+Chapeau World Circus Day,
The company is formed by a nucleus of three people -Thaïs Julià, Matías Muñoz and Vivian Friedrich- and a net of eight collaborators, with a total of four nationalities.
The project was born in September 2017, when Mati and Thaïs came together to explore dialogues between music and movement around investigation materials created by Thaïs. The collaboration was triggered by their artistic harmony created while sharing a musical project. At the beginning of 2018, Vivian collaborated with Som Noise for the first time, as an external eye on the small format “No In Vane”. Finally, in May of the same year, Vivian joined the team to start the co-creation of Breach.
Teamwork is the fundamental concept that gives strength and identity to the project. It is justified not just by a system of moral values, but also artistic ones. It allows for an uplifting of the scenic piece and creates a coherence between the different fields of the company. As an example, Laura Cardona, supporting the production, had not just included in the team, but also impulsed some dynamics of reflexion around the contents of the piece.
As an emerging company and with Breach as its first creation, Som Noise has won the award of European project circusnext+ (2019-21), La Central del Circ (creation’s support 2019-2020), Festival CIRCA CIRCa (Pitch ArtCena 2020) and Circostrada Network (Pitch Spanish Case 2019), amongst others. In 2020 it gained the support of the Department of Culture of the Government of Catalonia and the ICEC (Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies) for researching, creation and production.
You have JuliÃ
Thaïs Julià was born in Barcelona in 1991. Her strong connection with nature and interest for knowledge led her to pursue university studies in Biology (2009-14, Barcelona and Lisbon), laying down analytical and reflective bases that enriched, from a counterpoint, her artistic concerns: performing movement, music, writing, photography and drawing. At the age of 21 she entered the world of the circus and upon finishing university she fully focused on personal and professional development in the performing arts.
Currently her specialties are aerial rope, performance art and stage dialogue with music. Her training is hybrid, drawing on the physical theater Grotowski (Samuel Nuñez), dance (Presence, Asymmetrical Motion, flying low, contact-dance and butoh; with Olga Álvarez, Linn Johansson and Lucas Condró), circus (aerial, vertical and acro -dance) and yoga. In music she is trained in electric bass and percussion (hangdrum and frame-drum), and for a season she played and co-composed in the musical quartet Tres Cuartos.
Thaïs was not trained in a circus school, so she wove her educational path in a self-managed way with intuition, passion and persistence. This framework establishes a basis of freedom and personality that is perceived in the uniqueness of her work.
Her creations are born from a reflective process about the individual in society and nature, with a political and feminist axis. Always in dialogue with live music, her movement work focuses on an elaborate technical investigation at the service of content, in a deconstruction towards physical and communicative limits.
Since 2013 she has also worked as a circus teacher (Rogelio Rivel School, and Association Gente Colgada, Barcelona), teaching regular and intensive courses of technique, research and scenic creation.
